I had an exciting writing session scheduled with Michael Farren whose work has been recorded by artists such as Michael W Smith, Natalie Grant, Jaci Velasquez, Big Daddy Weave, Aaron Shust, Aaron Crabb, Phillips Craig and Dean among others. Tony Wood, who happens to have 27 #1 songs, is a staff writer for Word Music and has over 600 songs recorded in the CCM market.
So as the date was getting closer I knew I had to be prepared for the first question I’m always asked going into a writing session: What is it you want to write about? Being the less experienced writer in the room, I knew I had to have something to say! And nothing in me wanted to show up “unprepared” or without any inspiration. So that is how my light bulb came on and the Holy Spirit said: “write about the blood of Jesus.” And I went…huh? Isn’t that too much doctrine and we all know that it washed our sins white as snow and by his blood we are healed and cleansed? Hasn’t that been overly said throughout the years in the classic hymns? Doesn’t Gateway have a beautiful rendition already by Kari Jobe?
But honestly the Holy Spirit made me dig deeper and ask what the blood does in a practical way in your life, without cumulating the overused Christian phrases. That is how I began to journal feeling like the blood of Jesus heals those hidden parts of my heart where I’ve been hurt before and when I’ve messed up. I come before the Lord with genuine repentance, His blood was already there washing my sins away and making sure I knew there is no condemnation, and there’s nothing I can do for me to earn it and there is nothing I can do to lose it. It never loses it’s power…
When I was little I remember my parents teaching me to say in any dangerous situation: “I’m covered by the blood of Jesus”… When I entered the room for the writing session, I shared this with Michael and Tony and said why don’t we begin writing all these things about “It” saying: It does this, it does that, without saying what “it” is until the chorus. Immediately after sharing my thoughts Michael (who I like to call “The Dragon” because he just spits lyrics like fire) started just speaking each line so perfectly “It’s never been outrun by anything I’ve done” … Tony also truly connected with my heart and from there every line thrown out there by them was on point with what was heavy on my heart. “It’s never seen defeat from any enemy”. I told them at one point that I had this vision of the blood spreading everywhere like when a glass of water spills on the table. There’s nothing you can do to stop the flow “Reaching far, reaching wide”. Also remember loving the idea of throwing the word “scar” somewhere in there and Tony saying: don’t worry, we will find a place for your scar on the bridge “Every sin, every scar, all the guilt inside my heart covered now, flooded by the blood of Jesus”.
It’s been an exciting journey having written and recorded this track in less than two months, I just knew this was a powerful, timeless message I am eager to share it with the world… that is my heart, singing this song in both English and Spanish and soon we will work on the Portuguese version.
“Oh the Blood of Jesus” will be a the perfect embodiment of why we celebrate Easter but like I said this message is timeless and I’m excited to sing it all year round encouraging people to fall in love with the beauty of the blood and be grateful for such a precious invaluable gift.
